AEO (answer engine optimisation)
AEO, answer engine optimisation, is the work of getting your pages cited in answers from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews. It builds on SEO: a page has to be found and read before it can be quoted.

Answer engines take a question, pull a handful of pages from a search index and write a reply from them, usually with links. AEO is the work that makes your pages among those sources, and makes the sentence they lift say what you want it to say.
The term grew out of marketing practice, not a standard, so definitions vary. It overlaps almost completely with GEO, which comes from a 2023 research paper, and most people use the two interchangeably. Google’s own guidance is a useful check: it says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal SEO best practice.
Why it matters for a SaaS website
Buyers now ask an assistant who to hire, what a tool costs and how two products compare before they open a website. If the answer names three competitors and not you, you miss the shortlist and never see the visit you lost. Answer engines also lean on third-party pages, such as review sites, directories and Reddit threads, so your own site is only part of what they read.
How DesignMe handles it
Our house view is in AEO for SaaS. In short, we:
- Answer first. Each section opens with the answer in one or two plain sentences, under a heading written the way a buyer searches.
- Use specifics. Real prices, timelines, client names and dates, because engines quote sentences they can lift as they stand.
- Keep content crawlable. Main content ships as plain HTML, since many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, and robots.txt lets the search crawlers in. OpenAI separates OAI-SearchBot, which decides whether you appear in ChatGPT search, from GPTBot, which collects training data.
- Date and sign pages. Bylines, published and updated dates, and matching Article and Organization schema.
We test it on our own site. On 3 October 2026 we ran ten buyer questions through ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity. DesignMe appeared in three of the ten ChatGPT answers, and every one cited our Clutch profile rather than a designme.agency page, which is why third-party mentions sit in the plan too.
Example
Say a payroll SaaS wants to be named when someone asks for payroll software for remote teams in Europe. Its features page never says which countries it covers. A new page answers the question in its first two sentences, lists the countries, states the starting price and is linked from the pricing page. Monthly tests then show whether assistants start citing it.
Common mistakes
- Treating AEO as a separate channel. If the page cannot rank or be crawled, no AEO tactic helps.
- Blocking the wrong bots. A blanket bot rule can remove you from ChatGPT or Perplexity search. Decide on search and training crawlers separately.
- Vague copy. “Pricing varies” gives an engine nothing to quote.
- Testing once. Answers change month to month. Track the same questions over time.
Questions
- Is AEO different from SEO?
- Mostly not. Answer engines pull their sources from a search index, so a page that ranks, loads as plain HTML and answers the question clearly is already most of the way there. AEO adds a focus on quotable sentences, third-party mentions and testing what assistants actually say about you.
- How do you measure AEO?
- Write down the ten questions buyers ask before they buy, run each one through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google every month, and record whether you are named, which pages are cited and who appears instead. Referral traffic from assistants in your analytics is a second, smaller signal.
