Intercom integration

Intercom adds a Messenger to your site for live chat, bots and support. Framer has a built-in Intercom component, on Webflow we install the Messenger snippet in custom code, and on Astro or Next.js we use the official @intercom/messenger-js-sdk. We load it after consent and only where chat helps, so it doesn’t slow every page.

Setup by platform

How we set up Intercom

  • Framer

    • Native

Framer’s built-in Intercom component goes on the canvas with your workspace ID. We place it in the layouts where chat should show rather than site-wide.

  • Webflow

    • Embed

The Messenger snippet goes in the footer custom code, and the domain is added to Intercom’s trusted domains, or the Messenger won’t load.

  • Astro

    • API

@intercom/messenger-js-sdk in a client script with only the app_id for anonymous visitors, booted after consent and updated on view transitions.

  • Next.js

    • API

The SDK in a client component, with Intercom("update") on route changes and identity verification for logged-in users when the app shares the Messenger.

Use cases

What teams use it for

  1. Sales chat on pricing

Answer plan and security questions while the buyer is on the page.

  2. Qualify with a bot

A short bot flow asks team size and use case, then books a call or hands over to a person.

  3. One Messenger, site and app

Visitors and customers reach support from the same place, with history kept.

Before you add it

What to watch out for

  • Consent and GDPR

    Boot after consent

The Messenger sets three first-party cookies, one with no expiry. Loading with disabled: true and booting after consent keeps it off until the visitor agrees.

  • Data layer

EU hosting for new workspaces only

Intercom offers EU and Australian hosting for new workspaces on eligible plans; moving means a new workspace. EU workspaces use a different API base.

  • Performance

    Chat on every page costs

A chat widget is one of the heavier scripts on a marketing site. We load it on the pages that need it, after the main content.

Can we add Intercom to Framer without code?

Yes. Framer’s built-in Intercom component needs only your workspace ID.

Can Intercom wait for cookie consent?

Yes. Intercom documents loading the Messenger disabled and booting it after consent, then shutting it down on logout.

Why doesn’t the Messenger show on our site?

Usually the domain isn’t in Intercom’s trusted domains list, or the app_id is wrong. Both are quick to fix in Intercom’s settings.
